Gift Giving Tradition - How It Started

The tradition of giving gifts at Christmas is believed to have started with the Three Wise Men who brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. But the practice of giving gifts as is common today, evolved from a retail strategy that involved Santa Claus and attracting children into stores. For that reason, giving gifts at Christmas and during the holidays has been centered on children.

How Santa Claus Came Into The Picture
Giving gifts during Christmas started in the early 19th century when the celebration of Christmas was restored after a period when the Protestants in England banned Christmas celebrations. In 1820 to 1840 when Christmas celebrations regained popularity, stores started to advertise special Christmas shopping promotions. At the same time, newspapers also created advertising sections solely for holiday shopping advertisements. These special advertising
sections had prominent displays of Santa Claus.

In 1841 when a store in Philadelphia had a life-size model of Santa Claus, hundreds of children turned up to get a look at Santa Claus, which had become a new and popular element of revitalized Christmas celebrations. The interest in seeing Santa Claus provided a marketing idea to retailers that they could attract children and parents to stores through offers to have a look at a 'real' or 'live' Santa Claus. Because of that marketing strategy to attract children during Christmas, the focus was therefore to give Christmas presents to children.

Gift Giving Today
Today, gift-giving is still focused on children, but adults are as much popular recipients as children. Within families, the focus on children is evident in the fact that an individual child will get more gifts than any other individual adult member of the family. For young children, who are particularly delighted and enchanted by the holidays and Christmas festivities, toys are usually the gift given. Among older children, clothes and electronic gadgets are popular
items to give as Christmas gifts.

St Patrick's Day Kids' Crafts

St. Patrick's day is a great day for kid's crafts. It is a wonderful day to get out the paint, glue sticks, and crafting materials to create something to celebrate the holiday. The following are three great craft ideas of kids.

Blarney Stone:

A blarney stone comes from old Irish folklore. In southwestern Ireland, there is a very famous stone called the Blarney Stone. If you kiss the stone, you are said to be given the gift of eloquence. It is a big part of Irish tradition.

So, make your own Blarney stones at home as part of your St. Patty's Day crafts. To do this you need river stones, green paint, some googly eyes, and a black paint pen.

Start by painting the rocks green. You will have to wait for a while for them to dry, so it is best to do this in advance, and have an adult do it. Then, once the rock is painted, let your kids use the googly eyes, paint pen etc. to put a face on their very own Blarney stone.

You can use glitter, fabric, feathers, etc. to add a mouth, hair, and other accessories. Just don't forget to give it a smooch so that you can be eloquent.

Heart Shamrocks:

Shamrocks are a big deal in Irish culture as they are a symbol of luck. Any craft you make with shamrocks is a fun way to celebrate the holiday. A fun one for kids is to make a heart shamrock.

You need green construction paper, yellow construction paper, black crayons or markers, glue, scissors.

To make a heart shamrock you use the green construction paper and cut out three hearts. Arrange them into a shamrock shape, and cut out a stem. Use glue to attach them to the yellow construction paper. Then using the black crayons or markers, write out your felicitations of luck, such as "luck be with you" and then use it as a gift, card, etc.

Leprechaun Luck:

Leprechauns are mythic in Ireland, and are a great part of the St. Patrick's Day tradition. There are all sorts of lore surrounding leprechauns. So, one fun craft is to create a necklace using this lore.

To do this print out the following poem:

I keep three wishes handy,
In case I chance to meet
Any day a Leprechaun

Coming down the street.

Then create a shamrock, and write one wish on each leaf of the shamrock. Punch a hole in the top. Glue the poem to the side the wishes are not on, and string yarn through it to create a wish necklace. This can be worn during the day, to provide you with your green so that you do not get pinched, and is a fun way to grab hold of some Irish tradition.

St Patrick's Day Fun For the Whole Family

St. Patrick's Day is a wonderful day to celebrate and take part in the Irish heritage. It's a fun holiday and you don't even have to be Irish to enjoy it. This St. Patrick's Day why not get the whole family involved in some good, wholesome fun? Take part in some outdoor activities as well as some indoor ones. Here are some great ideas for your family to enjoy this month. There are a lot of Okanagan events your family can get involved in so join right in.

Shamrock Scavenger Hunt

This is a lot of fun for a group of kids to do. Make shamrocks out of cardstock or purchase readymade ones. You divide the group into two if you want for more of a challenge. What you are going to do is hide the shamrocks around the house, your backyard or even one of the Okanagan parks. But before you hide them you want to provide a clue on each one to where the next shamrock is hidden. Give the kids a shamrock in an envelope with instructions on how to get started and a hint as to where the first clue is hidden. You want the scavenger hunt to lead to something fun! Try having the last shamrock be a coupon for their favorite treat or some small gold chocolate candies.

Shamrock Shakes

These are easy to make at home. All you need is vanilla ice cream (or pistachio), vanilla flavoring, milk and green food coloring. You also need a blender or smoothie maker. For a single serving simply place a scoop or two of ice cream in the blender, add ½ - 1 cup milk, depending on how thick you like it, a ¼ teaspoon vanilla and a few drops off green food coloring. Blend and enjoy! The perfect dessert for a St. Patrick's Day dinner.

Corn Beef and Cabbage

This is a traditional Irish dish and you can make a simple version kids enjoy. You will need a head of cabbage, beef broth and Spam luncheon meat. Cut up the cabbage into small chunks, cube the Spam and place everything in a large pot of beef broth. Simmer until cabbage is tender and enjoy.

Shamrock Pins

These are simple to make and can be given as gifts to friends and family. You will need green felt or fun foam, pin backs (available at any craft store), craft glue and glitter. You might also like to use fabric paints to decorate your shamrocks.

Once you have gathered all of your supplies you simply trace a shamrock pattern onto the felt or fun foam. You can easily find a template on the internet if you can't draw own. Cut out the shamrocks. Decorate by putting glue around the edges of the shamrock and sprinkling with glitter. You can also draw tiny rainbows on them if you like. You may want to write the person's name on the pin. After your shamrock has dried, glue the pin back to it. Sometimes you can find sticky backed pins and then all you have to do is peel and stick in place.

Play Pin the Shamrock on the Leprechaun

Print out or purchase a large picture of a leprechaun. Make several shamrock pins but do not put the pins on the back. Mark a spot on the leprechaun's shirt where the pin should go. Now play just like you do pin the tail on the donkey only you try to get the shamrock pin in the right place.

The holiday times are when gift baskets are usually given, but of course gift baskets can be purchased for numerous other occasions, such as birthdays, weddings, baby showers, Valentine's Day, or any other occasion that gift baskets may seem appropriate to give.

There are all sorts of ideas for creating your own gift basket to give away to someone, but one idea that is actually frequently used by many people throughout the world is a candy gift basket. Unless you're buying a gift for someone that's intentionally on a diet or just can't stand candy for some reason, candy is usually always well-received! Buying A Christmas Gift For Husband

I've always had a hard time figuring out what Christmas gift to buy for my husband. He's an expert in computers, so buying computer stuff is out of the question. You know how it is, you go to all the effort to find and buy the perfect gift but you have no idea how to wrap it. You want to make it look special but hate all the usual wrapping papers. You've tried the gift bags but want something different for your special gift. And it seems such a waste of money because they all just end up being thrown away.

Here are ten great ideas for gift wrapping. They are very different from what you might usually use. You'll find something suitable for men and women, kids and adults. And it doesn't have to be expensive, unless you want it to be.

1. Use a scarf. This is a great idea for that special woman, whether she is your wife, girlfriend or mum. Scarves are always in fashion in one form or another. They can be cheap cotton or expensive silk. No messing with tape here either simply fold it around the gift then tie the ends together. Quick, easy and beautiful. Not only that but they get to keep the scarf as well.

2. Dish towels, tablecloths or aprons. Following the same idea, this can be great for relatives living overseas, granny or that favorite old aunt. I'm sure they'll love the "2 gifts in 1" idea. Fold it around the gift and tie in place with a ribbon.

3. T-shirt. This can be a great idea for a guy or girl, adult or child. Again just fold around the gift and tie with a ribbon.

5. Handbag or purse. This one is especially for the ladies. The small cotton purses are ideal as they can be fairly cheap but are flexible enough to put a range of gifts inside. Just make sure your main gift can fit inside before you buy it. I would think personalized gifts watches would fit nicely inside. Don't just throw the gift inside there. Wrap it with some colored tissue first.

6. Belt or tie. For a different way to hold the wrapping on that gift in place use a tie or belt. Even a bow tie would look fantastic. Then he can wear it later.

7. Bandana or knit cap. Children would love these. After wrapping the gifts, you could use barrettes, fancy rubber bands or cute pins to secure it.

8. Chain or necklace. Another beautiful, unique way to finish off your wrapping. This again can be as cheap or expensive as you can afford. Wrap it around and clasp into place. She won't rip this off too quickly, but then again she might.

9. Make your own paper. Here's an idea if you are a traditionalist and like wrapping with paper. Rather than just painting brown paper you can make something more special. Lay a sheet of waxed lunch wrap on an ironing board. Sprinkle with flower petals, leaves or confetti. Anything that will lay flat and is colorful and unique will work well. Lay another piece of waxed paper over the top. Cover with a thick cloth and press with a hot iron. The heat will melt the wax and bond the sheets together. All done.

10. Add accessories. Be creative with the gift tags too. You could use Christmas ornaments. Instead of ribbons, try different kinds of string like natural raffia. Add some plastic flowers or cherries, twigs and pine needles to brighten the look.

Select toys which are not too noisy or too big for the child’s living situation.
Select toys the child does not already have.
Selecting toys which the parents consider to be acceptable.
Selecting toys the child will enjoy.

This can make Christmas shopping for kids a little more difficult but does not make the shopping any less fun.

Make sure you get toys that are suitable for the child's age. Here are some reasons why:

Toys which are designed for older children might be potentially dangerous for younger children. For example, toys designed for children over the age of three may contain small pieces which pose a choking hazard. Children under the age of three still have a tendency to put objects into their mouth. So, for young children, make sure any part of the toy cannot be swallowed.
If the child is too young for the toy, they may be come easily frustrated because they can not use the toy appropriately. Conversely a child who is too old for a particular toy may become bored with the toy quickly.

Consider the child’s parents and their living situation
